WI, Job Summary: The Marketing & Communications Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing an effective multi-media contact strategy for the Department of Chemistry, including oversight of department communications, alumni relations, and development initiatives. Composed of approximately 550 faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students, the department has a long tradition of continued excellence in academics, research, and public engagement. This position works closely with key department staff as well as the University of Wisconsin Foundation, Wisconsin Alumni Association, and campus communication resources to provide prepared and original content for a variety of audiences through social media, website, and print. A primary focus is the development of engaging, relevant stories that feature cutting edge research, innovation, public engagement, and gift impact. This position also creates and maintains the “voice” of the department through social media, newsletters, and other publications. Responsibilities: Develops and supervises the execution of communication programs and may supervise personnel and/or other resources in support of institutional or unit communication goals. 15% Manages the day-to-day operational unit plans to align with strategic initiatives and to meet established objectives 30% Plans, writes, and edits content for various internal and external stakeholders 15% Plans and directs unit programs and/or projects to ensure adherence to deadlines and budgets 10% Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures 30% Develops, implements, and delivers communication materials through various mediums to designated audiences Institutional Statement on Diversity: Diversity is a source of strength, creativity, and innovation for UW-Madison. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience as a writer, reporter and/or editor in producing content for print publications and/or electronic communications. Required Skills: – Excellent writing skills, especially related to marketing communications with the ability to function well under deadline pressure – Excellent interpersonal skills with groups and individuals in diverse settings and using a range of techniques including face to face, telephone, email and other written correspondence, and public speaking. – Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to work toward goals within deadlines and manage complex projects. – Proficiency with web technology and writing for the web.
