Nationwide, The Executive Director of Marketing and Communications reporting to the Vice President of University Relations and Advancement, plans, implements, and assesses a comprehensive communications and integrated marketing strategy. The Executive Director coordinates with senior leadership and peers across campus to devise strategies and implementation plans for a full range of internal and external communications and marketing efforts that support enrollment, alumni relations, advancement, academic/faculty excellence, student development, and internal communications. The Executive Director leads a team responsible for advancing the institutions reputation, creating dynamic strategies supported by high quality, distinctive and results-driven communications and marketing campaigns to inform, influence and impact the University’s constituent audiences. Roles and Responsibilities: Contributes to setting the vision, strategy and long-term management approach for university communications and integrated marketing including: developing and maintaining university reputation and identity guides; brand and content strategies; and use of resources such as templates, digital monitors and environmental branding. Recommends, directs, and analyzes market research which may include audience analysis, segmentation, and survey development to monitor and measure communications and marketing results and to ensure that goals and targets for earned, owned, shared, and paid media are achieved. Oversees the planning, creation and implementation of university communications and integrated marketing strategies to support the University, including admissions and philanthropic strategies. Manages the department’s annual budget, portfolio of contractors, resources and technology platforms in support of the communications and marketing efforts. Supervises the communications, marketing and content production staff including professionals dedicated to: media relations; social media; content/production; writing/editing; photography/videography; brand development; and creative services across a variety of print, broadcast and multi-channel products (internal and external). Under the direction of the Vice President and integrated working groups, is responsible for advancing the University and building its reputation across a diverse range of audiences. Works closely with faculty, administration and staff, students, and alumni to develop compelling, distinctive and relevant stories to illustrate and advance the University. Directs the University’s web and digital presence to ensure brand consistency and voice and leading-edge use of technology to engage audiences and in support of institutional priorities. Focuses on continuous improvement to lead an integrated marketing unit that provides high quality, distinctive products, and consistently meets service expectations of the university community with effective expertise, counsel and skills, and capacity and ability to effectively prioritize competing priorities. Works closely with the offices of the President, Enrollment Management, Advancement, Academic Affairs, Student Success and Engagement, Intercollegiate Athletics, Business Affairs and various other departments/divisions to support communication and marketing needs. Seeks to strengthen the professional development of the university’s communications and marketing team of professional, advancing their competencies and capacity to contribute meaningfully to the life of the University, and to provide a workplace environment that is rated as outstanding by members of their profession. In discussion with the community and leadership, establishes and maintains communications and marketing brand governance that is capable of guiding the on-going evolution of information through community input, balanced evaluation of options and collaborative-based directions. Contributes and/or leads working groups comprising members from across the university to successfully and effectively create, implement and assess integrated marketing, content and campaign strategies, projects and initiatives. Serves on emergency and crises management teams through a set of proven crises management skills. Develops, produces and provides analysis for customized reports, dashboards and executive summaries through compelling easy to understand images, factoids, etc. Performs other duties as assigned; may be required to work beyond normal office hours and on weekends. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or other applicable field. Ten (10) years of related experience in the fields of communications and marketing. Five (5) years of supervisory experience of communications and/or marketing professionals including media/social media; brand marketing, content producers, writers/editors, website teams, and photographer/videographers. Preferred Experience Knowledge of and experience in higher education environments (academic or administrative). Proven record of effective collaboration and leadership capability. Knowledge of communications and integrated marketing strategies and trends, including advertising, public relations, media relations, branding, print, visual and social media. Ability to provide recommendations, and develop and contribute to sensitive issue management/crisis communications events. Knowledge of and commitment to the unique mission, culture, and goals of a leading Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) of higher education. Experience in leading, managing, and developing a diverse staff of professionals. Excellent verbal and written communication across multiple platforms including print, digital, video, and other content- and marketing-related platforms. Experienced content producer, editor and writer with high quality standard and familiarity with the range of content channels available to advance institutional communications and marketing strategies. Knowledge of marketing research, data capture and analysis, digital media platforms, digital content and media buying. Ability to guide and develop advanced executive-level content, writing and multi-media presentations. Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others and assign, monitor and recommend staffing and resource allocation including in-source and out-sourcing, and development and management of contractors including scope of work, project management and successful implementation. K n owledge, Skills and Abilities: In-depth understanding of strategically sound design concepts and best practices in a variety of media. Proven ability to develop strategic ideas and transform those ideas using conceptual writing and art direction in measurable and metrics-driven branding campaigns designed to meet established goals. Demonstrated maturity and ability to manage and work effectively with a wide variety of people across multiple units and contractors to develop strategies, maintain quality within budget, and the effective use of resources to achieve goals. Demonstrated experience in managing multiple tasks, evolving priorities and timely, accourage production deadlines. Must have strong writing and editing skills, be familiar with AP style, and demonstrate proficiency with the Adobe Creative suite. Must work well independently and as constructive member of a team with the ability to guide and inspire staff in a dynamic, fast-paced entrepreneurial culture, while determining communication priorities and resource use. Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures through a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. This position must work well with students, faculty and staff at all levels within a diverse, multi-cultural collaborative environment.
