The Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for developing and maintaining institutional brands through coordinated messaging campaigns for both BSU and NTC . This work is achieved by managing media and public relations initiatives, social and digital media content, and digital advertising initiatives on behalf of both institutions. The Assistant Director will create, edit, and distribute content using media necessary to appropriately communicate the story and its key messages — including, but not limited to, written content, photos and/or video, audio or other graphic or visual content. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for data and metrics activities meant to monitor and improve effectiveness of various communication strategies and channels. This data will be used to guide and influence institutional marketing decisions. Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing include: News Communications and Media Relations (50%) Providing day-to-day leadership of communications initiatives related to media and public relations. Collaborating with the executive and associate directors, developing a content strategy that supports department and institutional strategic priorities and ensuring that the department’s goals, objectives and projects are carried out to completion. Assisting in developing, updating, and maintaining content on the university’s website and blog, magazine, newsletter, recruitment, and other marketing materials as requested. Primary writer for press releases and other news or public relations content. Collaborating with internal and external subject matter experts to produce compelling, professional content that is consistent with institutional brand messaging and overall communication strategies. Digital Content Manager (15%) Maintaining digital content for Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College. This includes collaborating with OCM Web Content Manager to strategically place developed content on institutional websites, with particular emphasis on externally focused, marketing and/or news pages. Coordinating and scheduling messages for interior and exterior digital signage systems; ensuring maintenance of timely and comprehensive website calendars; and collaborating with Associate Director to strategically place developed content on appropriate social media channels. Ensuring that developed material placed on institutional websites and other digital marketing content channels meets relevant government and ADA requirements. Project Management (15%) Using project management software, managing results-oriented campaigns and projects using appropriate media platforms with clear communication of plans, timelines and outcomes to necessary stakeholder groups. Data, Analytics and Accessibility (10%) Collaborating with Web Content Manager to collect, interpret and report on various analytics programs, including but not limited to earned media measurement, web analytics and web quality control, Search Engine Optimization, social media measurement, and others as necessary to support department and institutional strategic priorities. Collaborating with Web Content Manager, obtaining, organizing and distributing data regarding web traffic and site navigation from Google Analytics and/or other tools. Training (5%) Serving as the primary institutional training and user support contact for online calendars, digital message boards and other distributed online content platforms managed by this position. Other Duties as Assigned (5%) Required Qualifications: Minimum qualifications for this position include: Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, writing, or related field. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in marketing/communications fields. This may be difficult to assess on an application, so perhaps this could better be addressed during the interview process. Knowledge of industry standards and practices for journalism and media relations. Proficiency with all aspects of web-based content management systems, such as WordPress. Proficiency in managing institutional social media sites, monitoring metrics related to those sites, and using those channels to engage an audience. Proficiency in web analytics tools, user research and search-engine optimization – including but not limited to Google Analytics. Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite. This may be difficult to assess on an application, so perhaps this could better be addressed during the interview process. Preferred Qualifications: Preferred qualifications include: Master’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Writing, Project Management, or related field. Previous experience in higher education or similar type of nonprofit organization. Experience in working as a member of a full-service marketing team, which could include graphic designers, printers, photographers, and other public relations or marketing professionals. Project management skills sufficient to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to develop and conduct end-user training. Experience with photography and videography, including editing and post-production. Knowledge of digital advertising, including paid social media campaigns.
