East Lansing, Michigan, Working/Functional Title Advancement Communications and Marketing Position Summary Basic Function: Research, interviews, writes, edits and produces articles, graphics, videos, and other collateral material that supports University Advancement’s marketing strategies and plans, which are designed to grow alumni and donor engagement. The marketing communication specialist is responsible for fundraising campaign content, preparing case statements, supporting principal gift communications, developing web content, writing scripts and talking points for MSU leadership, planning content for alumni and donor events and producing video assets for a variety marketing efforts. As a member of UA’s content strategy team, the marketing communication specialist will strategize with other team members to create and plan for the distribution of content to help in the success of UA goals. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities: Directly reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the University Advancement marketing communication specialist will: Write & Edit Produces timely, relevant, and compelling content to support the strategic and operational goals to advance the institution by connection by connecting alumni and donors to their passions. Shapes, edits, and writes a broad-spectrum of articles, copy and content that is customized for a variety of media platforms and channels. Interviews alumni, donors, students, faculty and staff regarding their achievements and the extraordinary impact at MSU and in the world. Connects storytelling with the Advancement engagement model to encourage alumni and friends to advocate, volunteer, stay connected, serve their communities and support the university. Drafts, edits and fact-checks talking points, speeches, brochure copy, and other materials as requested to support University Advancement alumni and donor engagement efforts. Researches and writes stories for print, scripts, and story boards for video production. Research & Coordination  With colleagues identifies pertinent topics, interviews sources and collects information to compose articles, brochure copy, web content, videos, graphics, and photography. Analyzes complex information from a variety of source to develop articles and copy that serve the needs and interests of our readers and audience segments. Researches and compares communication products produced by peer institutions (e.g. e-newsletters, web pages, blogs, and collateral) and shares with other members of the Marketing and Communication team. Serves as a project manager for marketing communication assignments and campaigns Production Prepares copy for regular print publications and websites. Conducts video interviews. Reviews and edits photos, videos, and audio content. Reviews and or edits manuscripts, news articles, news releases and other content. As available, proofread and edit materials by peers in the department. Manages digital assets within a digital asset management system. Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year degree program in journalism, English, communications, public relations, business, liberal arts or related field. One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in alumni and donor communications or related field. Experiences with word processing, database, spreadsheet, and presentation software; working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software. (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition, Premiere Pro), r equivalent combination of education and experience. Travel required; Must have a valid driver’s license. Desired Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree. 3 years of copywriting experience in higher education or readily transferable skills and a proven track record of working in a complex environment. 3 years of writing/editing highly visible publications. Collaborative team-oriented style. Ability to work with a variety of personality types and sensitive to various cultures. Knowledgeable of Associated Press and Chicago writing style standards Strong news and editorial judgment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills and intellectual curiosity. Excellent interpersonal skills. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.
