Ahh, personal brands — an essential part of building a network (and even a business) in 2022.
Here’s the thing: your personal brand is the perfect way for you to stand out. Whether you’re applying for a job or in the early stages of entrepreneurship yourself, your personal brand is how you can create an image and an experience that gets you referrals, helps you find ideal clients or employers, and builds recognizability.
Zig Ziglar makes it make sense with this quote: “If people like you they will listen to you, but if they trust you, they’ll do business with you.”
Your job? To hone in on a personal brand that encourages people to trust you and to work with you. Here’s how:
01. Gain clarity on your mission.
First up, you’ll need to align your personal brand with your mission and with your values — which means that you’ll need to make sure you have a mission and values. There are a few ways to do this, but one of the most efficient ways is to simply start writing it all down. Grab a cup of coffee or tea, sit down, and start brainstorming:
- What are your biggest dreams with your personal brand?
- What do you want to accomplish in the next 6 months? Year? Two years?
- What and who do you want to work with along the way?
- What are some values that you want to carry into every business experience you have?
- Why do you do what you do? What makes it so special to you?
Once you finally find clarity on your mission and in your values, you can start to curate a presence that speaks to them — which is absolutely key to aligning your own brand with the people and businesses you want to work for. Without defining a mission and a vision for your brand, you’ll develop a confused brand — which is the opposite of what you want.
02. Build a website.
Next, you need a website. Whether you’re looking at your site as a digital business card or as a place to make sales is up to you… but you’ll need to create one anyways. To start out, you won’t need to build a massive, custom-designed website (unless you want to). What you really need is a clear, cohesive, simple site that shows people who you are, tells them what you do, and gives them a way to get in touch with you. There are tons of platforms to do this on — from Squarespace to WordPress to Wix to GoDaddy — you just have to do it.
03. Be as consistent as possible.
To start creating a cohesive, powerful personal brand requires one thing almost more than anything else: consistency. If you continually show up, you’ll start making connections — and if you don’t, you won’t. Some of the best ways to continually show up are through creating, so consider writing blog posts, producing short videos, or building a teachable LinkedIn presence. If creating content isn’t in your zone of genius, make sure you’re showing up regularly on social media or even on podcasts. The idea? To build trust and recognition with consistency as your guide.
